7-July-08: 100% Malbec, so what?
It may be human nature or the result from marketing brainwash : we
do associate quality, greatness, sharpness to 100 % while 0 % is
mediocrity. Therefore, it appears natural that:
- The best pancake is made of 100 % pure butter
- The best cheese is made from 100 % raw milk (...well at
least French think that way)
... Then should best Cahors wines be 100 % Malbec?
The Chambert Orphée wine is 100 % Malbec and is made from very
low-yield vines (about 25HL / ha); Orphée is much appreciated by
the fine connoisseurs, the sommeliers and the private individuals
in search of tasty concentrated wines.
However, the best wine is not necessarily a 100 % 'something';
and as Jancis Robinson writes purposely, the best wine is not
necessarily the one which limits itself to the native varieties,
but to the vines which adapt themselves best to the soil. It's
common sense...but too polemical to be accepted in France with AOC
label!
All Chambert wines are created from the Chambert plots and our
own vines. While Chambert wines always include at least 85% of
Malbec, the 100 % Malbec is absolutely not a focus. Making the
best wine is our only mission...a great Malbec wine
of course! |
